Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your display width and content. Two columns work well for 80-character terminals. Three or four columns suit wider displays (120+ characters). Column width of 30-50 characters typically provides optimal readability for prose.

Plain text columns require a monospaced font to align properly. If you're viewing in a proportional font, the columns will appear misaligned. Use a code block, terminal, or text editor with monospace font settings.

This tool creates equal-width columns. For unequal columns (like a narrow sidebar and wide main content), you'd need to process each column separately and manually combine them, paying careful attention to line-by-line alignment.

Use the paragraph-aware distribution option, which keeps paragraph blocks together. Alternatively, use special markers in your text to indicate "no break" sections that should stay in a single column.

The gutter is the space between columns. Typically 2-4 spaces provides visual separation without wasting space. Too narrow and columns blend together; too wide and you lose the space-efficiency benefit of multiple columns.
