Frequently Asked Questions

Flesch Reading Ease measures how easy text is to read on a scale of 0-100. Higher scores mean easier reading: 90-100 is very easy (5th grade), 60-70 is standard (8th-9th grade), 30-50 is difficult (college level), and 0-30 is very difficult (professional/academic).

Most web content should target a Flesch Reading Ease of 60-70 or a grade level of 7-8. This ensures your content is accessible to the widest audience. Even highly educated readers prefer easy-to-read content for quick information consumption.

Different formulas weight factors differently and were developed for different contexts. Flesch-Kincaid is general-purpose, Gunning Fog targets business writing, SMOG is designed for health materials, and Coleman-Liau uses character counts instead of syllables. Using multiple gives a more complete picture.

Speaking time estimates use average rates: 150 words/minute for presentations, 130 for careful speech, and 200+ for fast speakers. Your actual pace varies with content complexity, pauses, and style. Use estimates for planning, then rehearse for accuracy.

Sentences over 25 words become harder to follow. Over 40 words significantly reduces comprehension. However, sentence variety matters—mix short impactful sentences with occasional longer ones. Consistent sentence length (all short or all long) makes writing monotonous.
